Adèle Fouché

Painter

Adèle Claudia Fouché was born and went to school in Pretoria. She studied Drama at the University of the Orange Free State where she obtained a BA Drama Hons (cum laude). While raising her four boys she studied various art forms, including ceramics. Lorette Espi was instrumental in instilling a passion for clay and the fluidity of this medium, and in 1993 Adèle won the prize for Best Novice at the National Ceramic Arts Festival.

She then studied sculpture with Cape Town artist David May, but found her true passion in 2004 when she studied oil painting with Cornelia Smook and Hannes Van Zyl at the Boland College in Paarl.

Since then she has spent the past 10 years painting and exhibiting. She has focused on landscapes, inscapes and portraits but is currently working on fynbos, while mastering the use of oils. Adèle, who has exhibited and curated exhibitions with well-known artists, now owns and runs her own gallery in Hermanus.

“I work to uplift and bring beauty into the world. And focus is always on the light. Light fascinates me both in a physical and metaphysical sense, as it is always illusive and yet always present. My search is to find a way to capture both aspects of light in the world.”
