Ann Marais has been involved with ceramics professionally since 1977. Her work falls into two main categories: deliberate, careful, conscious manipulation of the form for social comment, or, intuitive, gestural works that capture the momentary, the metaphysical, the unrepeatable gesture – in other words, the magical.
As an award winning ceramicist, Ann’s work may be viewed in museums in South Africa and abroad. She works with porcelain clay, not for its translucency but because it gives her a white ‘canvass’ upon which she can apply subtle colouring of slips, underglaze colours and glazes.
Her work, which is figurative and focuses on the interior landscapes of the human psyche, has been seen in over 200 exhibitions in South Africa, Italy, France, New Zealand and Hong Kong.
