FynArts is a classic arts festival and also a winter school that includes talks, demonstrations and workshops. The full programme can be viewed on 2019.hermanusfynarts.co.za.

There are 24 different workshops in various art forms on the programme this year, all proving to be very popular and some are already sold out.
In the category of painting and drawing workshops, two multiple-day and a number of one-day workshops, are presented.

Multiple-day workshops
Losing and Finding/Finding and Losing is a three-day workshop presented by Jill Trappler, an artist who consistently explores different modes of non-representational art in a variety of media. She has remained faithful to abstractionism and apart from participating in group and solo exhibitions, her far-reaching involvement includes teaching, mentoring and project work. This workshop offers an experience for each participant to gain access to the subject matter they would like to work with – figurative or non-figurative. The workshop is process-based rather than product focused. ‘Let go of old habits and find new ways of expressing yourself through the use of materials and different approaches to making images’ says Jill.

Watercolour Ways presented by Carl Becker, an established artist and veteran of many exhibitions. This two-day workshop is sold out.

One-day workshops
Mark Making, presented by Monique Day-Wilde, introduces experienced and would-be artists to develop a more creative approach through play and experimentation. Mark-making describes the different lines, patterns and textures possible in the creative process and applies to any art material on any support. Non-traditonal mark-making tools and materials will be used and a simple artist’s book will be created.

The Benguela Cove Life Drawing Competition is not an ‘instructed’ workshop but a competition with a difference. Artists will spend a relaxed morning drawing from life. At the end of the session judges will select the winning artwork which will be exhibited for one year at the Manor House. The rest of the selected works will form the Life Drawing exhibition that will be on show at the Manor House for the duration of the festival.

Plein Air Landscape and Drawing with Light and Dark are two one-day workshops suitable for all levels of skills, offered by Christopher David Reid. Both workshops are sold out.

Design, Decorate, Detail will be presented by Madoda Fani. In this workshop, participants will work on clay slabs to practice the techniques of the carefully executed, hand-carved and detailed designs Madoda uses to produce his unique pots. His work is inspired by nature: plants, insects, plants and animals and is exhibited internationally.

Marvellous Mugs is presented by Hennie Meyer who is well-known for creating highly individual pieces. This workshop is sold out.
